Dokra

The oldest form of metal casting, ‘Dhokra’, is popular because of its primitive simplicity. In Odisha, Dhokra casting is a very old practice used by the caster community. Dhokra casting is traditionally carried out in certain pockets of Mayurbhanj, Raygada, Dhenkanal, and Keonjhar districts of Odisha.
The indigenous knowledge of casting is still put into practice by casting communities. Earlier artisans used to develop traditional items but nowadays a lot of new design products like door handles, boxes, hangers, and other new design products are developed by the artisans. The Dhokra motifs have been inspired by the tribal community and the cast group “Rana” creates Dhokra craft from brass, bronze, bell metal, and aluminum.
